Choosing your cabinet’s color, wood tone, and/or texture are key elements to the overall effect of your new kitchen. But remember that not all cabinets need to have solid doors. Want to add a bright airy feel to your kitchen? Consider adding glass front doors or even open front cabinets to your kitchen cabinet remodel project. Both can easily make a small kitchen feel larger by adding up to 12 inches of depth to the room.
Do you love to line up the cups and glasses in neat rows for display? Just a single glass front or open cabinet area can make a beautiful display area for a set of crystal glassware, Grandmother’s china, or an antique tea set.
Open front cabinets are a cheaper way to go, but leaving the space open means dust will collect on the items on display. So factor the extra time for dusting into the equation when deciding which works best for your kitchen and budget.
Glass reflects light around the room, making the kitchen appear brighter and more cheerful. And glass doesn’t have to be clear! There are many options to choose from tinted to opaque, fluted, frosted, etched, and painted or stained.
Another way to personalize glass doors is adding unusual mullions. Mullions are the strips of wood that can be used to crosshatch the door in any of a wide variety of panes, sizes and patterns.
If you decide on glass front doors, there are snap-on cabinet door hinges that allow the glass doors to be easily removed for cleaning. When cleaning non-removable doors, always remember to spray the cleaner on the cloth rather than onto the glass itself. Otherwise the liquid could drip down, get caught in the door frame and eventually cause damage to the wood.
Be sure to explore the possibility of adding lighting inside the cabinets to highlight the treasures displayed within and provide lovely backlighting to the room.
Adding color and design to open shelf or glass front cabinets is a snap when you apply wallpaper or even heavy-duty wrapping paper on the wall as a backdrop. What a fun temporary re-do that can change the character of the kitchen in an instant. How about pastels for Easter and red or green for the Winter holidays? The possibilities are endless. Have fun.
