Have you been thinking of planning a custom kitchen cabinet remodel, but are unsure of which of the many features available might work for you? Learning the lingo is a key to understanding and becoming comfortable with any new endeavor. Let's learn a bit about kitchen remodeling.
Most often the words are familiar, but used in a slightly different context than what may come immediately to mind. For example, when speaking cabinet, a carcass is just a reference to the box that makes up the basic structure of a cabinet piece.
Shelves:
- Fixed – Construction into the cabinet in a set manner.
- Adjustable – Can be moved via an assortment of predrilled holes set in a wide range of layouts.
- Shelf Pins – Metal or plastic hardware that fit into the predrilled holes and upon which the shelves rest. These allow you to reposition adjustable cabinets.
- Pull-out or Slide-out – These are set on sliders so that they can be pulled out to make it easier to get to items in the back.
- Plate shelves - Using wooden dowels spaced to create niches for storing individual plates.
- Lasy Susan – A turntable type of shelves mounted inside the cabinet, often in the corner, that allows you to spin to move items from front to back easily.
Drawers:
- Drawer slides – Mount to the bottom of the drawer box and have a roller that in turn fits into a track mounted to the cabinet. This lets draws open and closer more easily than when drawers slide simply on the wood or on plastic guides.
- Extension slides – Allow drawers to pull out all the way out of the cabinet so that you have access to the very back.
- Self-closing drawers – This type of drawer has a spring or similar mechanism so that when you give the draw a slight push, it will close completely on its own.
- Silverware organizer – Sections that are built into the drawer to separate your silverware.
