There are many reasons for remodeling your kitchen cabinets. The kitchen is the center of the home and investing in upgrading yours can add significantly to your family’s enjoyment of the property and also to the value of your home.
Maybe the color or materials of your cabinets or countertops are old and outdated. Perhaps you need more storage. Or maybe the spatial layout that isn’t working for your family’s needs. Feeling comfortable moving around and working in your kitchen is huge. But how could your kitchen layout work better for you?
A tried and true method of kitchen layout is to create a kitchen work triangle. The sink, cooking area, and refrigerator form the three points. Each of the points should be at least four feet but not more than nine feet apart to allow for maximum efficiency. Also, each of the three preparation areas should be intersected by usable counter space. According the the universal specifications, between 12 to 24 inches is ideal.
The concept of the kitchen work triangle originated in the 1940’s. It was designed around the idea of one-person meal preparation. The layout also predated many modern appliances like microwaves.
While the work triangle is still helpful, modern families often prefer to participate in meal preparation together. Since the 1990’s, the work triangle concept has been augmented by the idea of multiple preparation areas or zones. The concept of four kitchen zones, one each for food preparation, baking, cooking, and cleaning is now quite popular. This is especially true in homes with larger kitchens.
A few key elements to consider when planning your kitchen layout include:
- Sufficient work / counter space
- Room to move between various points/zones
- One or two sinks areas
- Storage and organization
