The shortest path

Eliminate wasted steps by keeping things organized and where you use them most. Keep your dishes and flatware near the dishwasher to make it easy to put them away.

Keep walkways wide enough

Keeping pathways at least 36" wide is a minimum, except for the cooking zone which should be at least 42". Have multiple cooks? Better make that 48".

Watch out for corners

Corners can be tricky. Make sure that doors and drawers of all your cabinets have plenty of access. Measure any appliances in the area and their handles. Better yet, keep appliances away from corners entirely.

Direct traffic in the kitchen

Keep plenty of room around cooktops for handles and hot pots, creating a safer zone for kids and people passing through.

Get the microwave right

For most adults, a counter height microwave and convenient. For households with children, you may consider putting one below the counter, in reach, above the counter, to keep it out of reach. Plan according to your own needs.

Storage around the stove

A handy shelf or pull out near the stove, to store your spices and utensils is always welcome. Keep the handy and minimize steps.

Knife storage

Knife storage can be tricky. Your best option is a magnetic strip mounted on the backsplash, Keep them within reach for you, and out of reach for the kids.

Recycle the easy way

Make recycling easy with a cabinet for recycling bins and trash.

Add a kitchen desk

A message center in the kitchen, with a spot for the phone and a bulletin board, keeps the entire family on the same page.

Plenty of plugs

Install plenty of outlets along the backsplash and have power whenever you need it.
